Employer: Sol Plaatje University
The Officer: Assets supports the Manager: Assets with decision making and implementation of operational activities related to the management, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, user education and training, policy and procedure development, and resource management of assets.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- 3 years work experience including 1 year at a supervisory level within asset management.
- Computer literate – MS Office, especially Excel and Word.
- Integrator System (ITS) experience, including asset management.
Duties and Responsibilities
Asset Management
- Perform the reconciliation of the fixed assets register (that includes movable assets, work in progress, land, and buildings, leased assets, leasehold improvements, and intangible assets) to the general ledger control accounts.
- Assist with the unbundling of work in progress to land and buildings in line with applied accounting framework.
- Execute and oversee asset verification, investigate, and report on variances, make necessary recommendations to resolve discrepancies, and update of the asset register.
- Manage operational requirements in the field or any barcoding requirements.
- Identification of additions and disposals of assets for authorisation and recognition in the general ledger and that the necessary entries are processed in the fixed asset register and accounting records.
- Calculation of depreciation in line with the accounting framework and relevant cost centre of SPU.
- Identification of assets at risk of being fully depreciated.
- Identification of indicators that might lead to impairment and the re-evaluation of asset useful lives and residual values.
- Provide a general customer service by attending to any related queries or requests.
- Perform duties in relation to planned mechanisms to safeguard assets.
- Processing of payments made from the infrastructure bank account.
- Performance of the bank reconciliation to the bank statement.
- Reconciliation of the subsystem to the general ledger.
- Keep up to date with relevant accounting standard amendments and impact thereof on the financial statements.
- Active day to day coaching of relevant staff on asset management policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Assist with the orientation and training of relevant staff on asset management policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Provide recommendations and inputs on operational improvements of Asset Management policies and
procedures.
- Coaching of Assets staff.
- Ensure fair allocation of workloads.
- Monitor operational activities of junior staff members.
- Execute instructions as received from the line manager.
- Assist with preparation of asset figures for quarterly reporting.
- Assist with preparation of asset schedules for year-end financial statements with accompanying notes and accounting policies.
- Research and implement best practices.
- Assist with relevant strategic and operational reports as and when required to relevant Committees, Council, or the Department.
