ENERGY ● ELECTRICITY GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION
LEARNER TECHNICIANS
BASIC SALARY: R211 435 TO R229 914 PER ANNUM ● REF NO: NRG 21/25
The City of Cape Town (Energy Services) has 40-month contractual positions for learner technicians, who would hold an S4 Diploma or National N Diploma in the following disciplines:
SCADA FIELD SERVICES
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding.
Key performance areas:
- Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition pre-commissioning testing, maintenance testing, audits and fault repairs on Power System RTUs.
TELECOMS
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding or National N Diploma.
Key performance areas:
- Provision and maintenance of telecommunication systems (fibre, copper, microwave, radio, GSM and network configuration) for electricity infrastructure between substations, control centre and facilities.
ENGINEERING
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding.
Key performance areas:
- Planning and design of high voltage, medium voltage and low voltage distribution systems / project management / customer connections.
ELECTRONIC SECURITY SUPPORT SERVICES (ESSS)
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding or National N Diploma.
Key performance areas:
- Provision and maintenance of access control, intrusion alarms, CCTV, electric fences, and fire alarms for electricity infrastructure.
HIGH VOLTAGE
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding.
Key performance areas:
- Operations, repairs and maintenance, plant performance, fault investigations of 11- 132kV substations (switchgear, transformers, batteries and ancillary equipment), underground cables and overhead lines.
ADVANCED DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ADMS)
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding.
Key performance areas:
- Update, troubleshoot and implement corrections on the digital system controlling the Power Distribution Network so that it is always functional
- Support operational and planning staff by extracting and presenting historical network performance data.
PROTECTION PERFORMANCE AUDIT AND SETTINGS
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding.
Key performance areas:
- Auditing of Power System Protection equipment to ensure performance and quality standards regarding protection, automation and control system operations are adhered to on the medium and high voltage networks.
ENTERPRISE ASSET MANAGEMENT (EAM)
Requirements:
- Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) Electrical Engineering course in the related field or in-service training still outstanding.
Key performance areas:
- Distribution Engineering Support Services - Project manage electrification projects for informal settlements, as well as the LED Retrofits on streetlight infrastructure
- Conduct cable fault pre-location; positive identification and pre-commissioning tests on LV and MV cables
- Project management Overhead to Underground projects, consumer requests to relocate existing services
- Condition monitoring of Switchgear or plant.

- Be in possession of at least a valid Code B driver’s licence
- Reside in the Cape Metropole
- Be eligible to be registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as Candidate Technicians. Learner Technicians will be responsible for paying the yearly ECSA fees.
