The Federated Employers Mutual Assurance Company (RF) Proprietary Limited (FEM) was established as a mutual insurer in 1936 and on the introduction of the Workmen’s Compensation Act 1941 was granted a license to continue to transact workmen’s compensation insurance for the building and construction industry. This insurance compensates employees or their dependents following an injury arising from occupational accidents and illness caused by industrial diseases. FEM’s operations are essentially confined to the insurance of employers against their liabilities under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 1993 (COIDA). FEM operates under license from the Minister of Employment and Labour and is also registered as a non-life insurer, with premium income more than R1 billion and total assets in excess of R9 billion.
FEM is looking to appoint a Senior Operational Manager. Reporting to the Chief Medical Operations Officer, the successful applicant will lead and drive the Operational area with overall responsibility for management in accordance with the agreed business plan. Moreover the position is responsible for inter-alia overseeing daily operations of the company, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness of all processes to reduce costs, manage budgets and resources effectively; ensure compliance with industry regulations and company standard operating procedures and policies; lead a team of department heads and managers; monitor and analyse performance metrics and identify areas of improvement; drive initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction and retention as well as staying up to date with industry trends and best practices. Working knowledge of optimising operational workflows, improved customer service and ability to drive business growth are important requirements for this position. The ability to design and implement operating procedures and risk measures are imperative. Previous experience in insurance or medical aid operations would be advantageous.
The minimum requirements of the position are a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Operations Management or a related field and preferably a Master’s or post graduate degree. A minimum of 10-years’ experience in operations management with a preference for experience in the insurance/ medical aid industry. The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a proven track record of managing large teams and complex projects. A strong understanding of insurance operations in medical claims and underwriting coupled with strategic thinking to solve complex problems and a strong working knowledge of IT systems, software and tools complete our requirements.
Experience of working with executive teams and reporting into formal forums, namely boards and executive committees is a pre-requisite for this position.
