Senior Network Technician (Job Level 9.1)

Duties:
• Network design, and configuring and establishing standards for copper, radio and fibre networks.
• Installing, maintaining and supporting wired copper, radio and fibre networks.
• Providing network support to Stellenbosch University (SU) staff and students, ensuring network stability and resolving issues.
• Making recommendations on network standards, configurations and equipment procurement.
• Configuring, administering and documenting network infrastructure, IP-based communication systems and components.
• Conducting technical training and workshops for SU colleagues, staff and students.
• Assisting with creating self-help guides to empower users to resolve network and computer issues independently.
• Staying up to date with industry trends and technologies through research and continuous learning.
• Following standard guidelines to manage and document network-related tasks and requests.
Required Skills
- Experience In Supporting Computer Networks, Including Ethernet, Wi-Fi And Fibre Technologies.: 3 to 4 years
- Thorough Understanding Of Network Technology And Computer Architecture.
- In-Depth Knowledge Of Radio Network Technology.
Candidate Requirements
Requirements:
• An NQF 5 qualification or certification in networking/computing (A+, N+, MCSE, MCITP, Cisco CCNA, Huawei HCIA), or equivalent relevant training.
• At least three years’ experience in supporting computer networks, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi and fibre technologies.
• Thorough understanding of network technology and computer architecture.
• In-depth knowledge of radio network technology.
• Proficient in DHCP, TCP/IP, and related network protocols.
• Expertise in Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android operating systems.
• Knowledge of IP-based telephony systems (Microsoft Teams, OpenScape Voice, Asterisk, VoIP).
• The ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills.
• The ability to share knowledge and mentor team members.
• Effective time management and the ability to prioritise tasks under pressure.
• Willingness to provide after-hours support (with extra compensation).
Recommendations:
• Certifications in Huawei, Cisco, Aruba or other relevant networks.
• Experience with network monitoring tools.
• Knowledge of SIP/VoIP systems and Microsoft Teams telephony.
• Familiarity with audiovisual systems like Extron and Poly.
