VACANCY: INTERIOR DESIGN LECTURER
The Department of Interior Design & Decor seeks to appoint an outstanding person with a keen interest in teaching Interior Design. Someone who can make an efficient and lasting impact to the academic and creative life of the Academy. It is fundamental that candidates have good understanding of the structural- and finishing material, spatial and experiential discipline of Interior Design, in producing a design strategy. The appointee would also be contributing to cross-disciplinary projects in innovation and teaching.
The applicant will be able to share their vision for contributing to a programme that brings together the different strengths already present in the Academy, whilst developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant.
This role profile is indicative, not prescriptive, and the balance of duties will be in accordance with the employment contract.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Teaching and learning support
o Module development and delivery: Design, develop, and deliver modules across levels, including new qualifications, while ensuring compliance with SAQA, CHE, and Academy standards.
o Digital learning and course updates: Create and maintain virtual learning environments and continuously review and update course content.
o Effective teaching techniques: Implement innovative teaching methods and materials to engage students and foster understanding and enthusiasm.
o Practical and software instruction: Teach and assess practical skills, software proficiency, and theoretical knowledge at the Diploma level.
o Departmental and public engagement: Contribute to departmental administration, participate in professional meetings, and actively engage as a public intellectual.
· Planning and managing resources
o Module delivery: Responsible for designing and delivering module outcomes in compliance with regulations.
o Departmental contribution: Support departmental management, including budget planning, business strategies, and team collaboration.
o Strategic planning: Participate in departmental and institutional strategic planning initiatives.
o Research and resource management: Plan and deliver research or consultancy modules effectively within available resources.
o Quality and time management: Ensure quality standards are met while balancing teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities.
· Competencies and behavioural attributes:
o Passion and industry expertise: Energy, commitment, and a deep understanding of design and décor practices.
o Communication skills: Proficiency in written, verbal, and academic English and Afrikaans, ensuring effective interaction.
o Teaching proficiency: Capability to teach software, theory, and practical applications across diverse design concepts.
o Student development: Ability to monitor student performance, provide constructive feedback, and coach professionally.
o Collaboration and planning: Strong interpersonal skills for teamwork in multicultural settings and meticulous planning/administrative abilities.
· Expertise
o Required to be an externally recognised authority in the subject area.
o In-depth understanding of own specialisation to enable the development of new knowledge and understanding both within the field, or through application, with a particular emphasis on software, technical knowledge, and design.
o A record of companionship and cooperation between colleagues who share responsibility and teaching initiative at tertiary level.
· Liaison and networking
o Involve in internal networks for example by chairing and participating in Academy subcommittees. Develop links with external contacts such as other educational bodies, employers, and professional bodies to foster collaboration.
o Ascertain external networks for example with external moderators, or suppliers and manufacturers for Design Talks.
· Initiative, problem-solving and decision-making
o Resolve problems affecting the delivery of qualification within own educational programme and in accordance with regulations.
o Make decisions regarding the operational aspects of own educational programme.
o Support in decision making which have an impact on other related curricula.
o Strategic development of new courses or appropriate areas of activity and contributing to the development of such ideas.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
· A sound track record of Interior Design industry engagement
· National Diploma / Degree obtained from an accredited Educational Institute.
· AutoCAD / Revit comprehensive knowledge required. Adobe suites proficiency would be adventitious.
· Previous involvement with educational training / assessment could be to the applicant’s advantage.
