The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) is a world-renowned agricultural research institute conducting research for the sugar industry. The South African sugarcane industry is committed to enhancing the sustainability of small-scale growers (SSGs) through targeted support. The SSG project at SASRI aims to develop and implement a participatory approach that empowers small-scale growers to identify and tackle the challenges they face in production. SASRI is currently seeking a graduate in Agricultural Extension, with a background in social sciences, to join the project in 2025. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with the SSG project leaders.

Purpose of the Graduate Programme is to:

• To provide workplace experience to graduates allowing them practical exposure that will enrich their academic training, enhancing future employability
• To provide additional skills development training that will stimulate personal and professional growth, provide life skills and boost work readiness (Basic Business, Technical and Life Skills Training) through formal mentorship

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Should have an interest in working in an agricultural research environment
• Social science background would be advantageous
• Social facilitation skills
• Analytical abilities
• Working with data (quantitative and qualitative)
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• A team player that can self-motivate and work independently
• Goal oriented and career focussed

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

• This programme specifically targets South African candidates who have completed a Bachelor's Degree /Post-Graduate Degree in Agricultural Extension

Term of the Internship:

• Participants will be offered a one- year contract

Remuneration and Benefits:

• Successful participants will receive an allowance of R4 500.00 on a monthly basis
• We offer onsite accommodation, meals, clinic facilities and a laundry service: Should you make use of this option a monthly deduction of R380.00 will be made from your allowance via our payroll
