An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 2 qualified and experienced Diesel Fitters to join the Marine Engineering department at Sea Harvest Corporation in Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. POSITION: DIESEL FITTER
REPORTING TO: DIESEL FITTER SHOP FOREMAN
PURPOSE: To be responsible for inspecting, dismantling and reassembling engines and other components, diagnosing and repairing faults and performing routine maintenance on engines and equipment.
OUTPUTS AND MEASUREMENTS:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Ensure that all diesel fitting functions are carried out by maintaining vessels in accordance with manufacturers specifications.
• Ensure that shop machinery operates in accordance with safety regulations.
• Compile spare parts list for scheduled machinery overhauls.
• Conduct efficient problem-solving exercises to address malfunctions of the engine and identify and report the cause of the malfunctions.
• Maintain accurate records of all tasks and work.
• Ensure compliance of all safety and hygiene standards and procedures.
• Provide corrective action of deficiencies during maintenance, installation, and production projects.
• Ensure hygiene and housekeeping procedures are adhered to.
• Promote and support a holistic working environment within the department.
• Mentor apprentices under supervision
REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES:
• Qualified Diesel Fitter with a trade certificate.
• Minimum of 7-10 years of experience within a diesel fitter capacity preferably within the marine industry.
• Must have an analytical mindset and the ability to understand technical documentation such as design blueprints and instructional manuals.
• Medically fit to work onboard fishing vessels.
• Proactive and flexible, willing to work long hours.
• Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to supervise systems and processes.
• Sound knowledge of combustion, compression and other industry related testing procedures, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and the repair and maintenance thereof.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to function independently in decision making and analyse self-performance constructively.
