The Stellenbosch University (SU) Language Centre is one of four centres within the Division of Learning and Teaching Enhancement. The Centre’s mandate is to promote multilingualism and to provide language-related support and services to Stellenbosch University staff and students, as well as to external clients.
The Language Centre’s Academic and Professional Literacies courses focus on the development of reading, writing and critical thinking skills that are required for success in an academic environment. These courses are relevant to students’ fields of study and future professional careers and focus on developing competencies that students can apply across the curriculum.
The advertised lecturer/ coordinator position falls within this focus area.
Duties:
• Coordinating and presenting academic and professional literacies modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
• Developing course materials that are driven by innovative and appropriate teaching techniques (including blended learning materials), and that create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
• Managing all administration relating to relevant modules.
• Managing the budget for the module and the ordering of course materials.
• Liaising with faculties regarding academic and professional literacies courses.
• Training and mentoring facilitators in academic and professional literacies.
• Reviewing and refining syllabus and course materials, tests and other assessments continuously, and updating all of these, when required.
• Presenting ad hoc workshops and short courses on academic and professional literacies to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as to external clients where required.
• Performing context-specific research to inform best practice in the field of academic and professional literacies and for reporting purposes.
Required Skills
- Experience In Curriculum Development And Assessment Protocols.
- An Appropriate Master’S Degree In Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition Or Related Field
- Teaching Experience In The Higher Education Environment: 3 to 4 years
Candidate Requirements
Requirements:
• An appropriate master’s degree in applied linguistics, second language acquisition or other related fields.
• At least three years' teaching experience in the higher education environment, specifically in academic and professional literacies.
• Experience in curriculum development and assessment protocols.
• Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to work in a complex academic environment.
• Experience in blended learning and developing e-learning material.
• The ability to manage time efficiently and work to strict deadlines.
• Evidence of teaching ability and fostering a positive learning environment for students.
• Computer literacy in MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams).
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Recommendations:
• PhD or enrolment for a PhD.
• Commitment to continuous professional development.
• Knowledge of Stellenbosch University’s learning management system (Moodle).
• Evidence of accredited publications in academic literacies, second language acquisition and/ or related fields.
Shortlisted candidates must be willing to take a computer proficiency test, and to give a teaching demonstration of an aspect of academic literacies or second language acquisition.
