The Language Centre is one of four centres within the Division for Learning and Teaching Enhancement. The Centre provides language support and language services to Stellenbosch University staff and students, as well as to external clients. The Language Centre’s isiXhosa portfolio aims to promote multilingualism at Stellenbosch University (SU). To this end, the portfolio aims to empower staff and students by developing their multilingual skills and teaching them to engage in meaningful isiXhosa communication in different contexts. In addition, the portfolio aims to assist with the development of terminology in isiXhosa and the translation of academic and institutional texts in order to advance the use of isiXhosa at SU.
Duties:
• Presenting isiXhosa language proficiency modules and short courses offered by the Language Centre to students, staff members and members of the public through face-to-face and blended modes of delivery.
• Assisting with the development and review of syllabi, course material and assessments informed by innovative and appropriate teaching techniques (including blended learning materials) which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
• Performing administrative tasks relating to isiXhosa language proficiency modules and short courses.
• Assisting with training and mentoring isiXhosa language tutors.
• Assisting with the translation of academic and institutional texts from English into isiXhosa.
• Assisting with quality assurance (editing/proof-reading/revision) of existing isiXhosa academic and institutional translations.
• Translating and developing isiXhosa terminology for academic and institutional purposes.
• Ensuring the quality of existing isiXhosa academic and institutional terminology.
• Assisting with context-specific research to inform best practice in the field of second-language teaching and/or terminology development.
• Participating in the Language Centre’s multilingual mindset working group and isiXhosa working group.
Required Skills
- A Relevant Honours Degree Or Similar Relevant Qualification Focused On Isixhosa.
- At Least One Year’S Isixhosa Language Teaching Experience In The Higher Education Environment.
- Experience In Curriculum Development And Assessment Protocols.
Candidate Requirements
Requirements:
• A relevant honours degree or similar relevant qualification focused on isiXhosa.
• At least one year’s isiXhosa language teaching experience in the higher education environment.
• Experience in curriculum development and assessment protocols.
• Commitment to high quality teaching and fostering a positive learning environment for students.
• Experience in translation from English to isiXhosa.
• Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to work in a complex academic environment.
• A proven ability to manage time and work according to strict deadlines.
• Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams).
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in isiXhosa.
• Very good understanding of spoken and written English.
Recommendations:
• Experience in blended learning and developing e-learning material.
• Commitment to continuous professional development.
• Knowledge of the University’s learning management system (Moodle).
• Evidence of accredited publications in second-language acquisition and/or related fields.
Shortlisted candidates must be willing to take a translation proficiency test, as well as to demonstrate practically an aspect of teaching isiXhosa as a second language. Additionally, they must be willing to complete a timed written assignment.
