The Division of Rural Health (Ukwanda) seeks to advance rural health as an academic discipline to addresses the key issue of health equity, which is central to the mission of the Department of Global Health and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). As an academic Division of Stellenbosch University (SU), Ukwanda aims to be a champion for advancing rural health, locally and globally. Its activities are centred on making a difference to rural health care through service, training and research, with the goal of optimising the health of rural communities.
The primary focus of this position is the development, implementation and ongoing delivery of postgraduate programmes in the field of Rural Health.
The incumbent will work at both the Worcester and Tygerberg campuses, with a base at Worcester. Engagement with a widely distributed training platform will also be required.
Duties:
The incumbent will be responsible for the following, with the support of the head of the Division:
• Coordinating the Postgraduate Diploma Rural Medicine:
o Recruiting and enrolling students.
o Collaborating with and accreditation of appropriate clinicians across different platforms that would supervise students.
o Establishing, coordinating and documenting students’ learning journey and their assessment.
o Revising the component modules.
• Coordinating the development of the Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Health and Structured Master’s in Rural Health, through facilitation of engagement with other departments in the FMHS and with relevant stakeholders, and by surveying the needs of potential students.
• Coordinating the development of additional postgraduate courses within the Division of Rural Health.
• Developing and implementing short courses in Rural Health.
• Contributing to the advancement of a research programme in Rural Health linked to the postgraduate training programmes.
• Pursuing own research within the overall Ukwanda research agenda.
Required Skills
- A Four-Year Health Professional Qualification.
- At Least Two Years’ Experience Of Teaching At A Higher Education Institution.
- Experience In Developing And Delivering Academic Programmes.
Candidate Requirements
Requirements:
• A four-year health professional qualification.
• Master's degree in health professions education, or in higher education, or in a related Health professional field.
• At least two years’ experience of teaching at a higher education institution.
• Experience in developing and delivering academic programmes.
• Knowledge of the South African higher education sector.
• Experience of carrying out research (individually or as part of a team).
• Experience in project management, with an eye for detail.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong writing ability and good presentation skills.
• Good computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as experience of using a learning management system.
Recommendations:
• Teaching experience in the health sciences.
• Knowledge of more than one official South African language.
• An established research profile, with publications in peer-reviewed journals and experience of grant writing.
