Our client, Dutoit Agri, based in Ceres, has an opportunity available for a Horticulturist to join their technical team. The main focus of the role will be to play an advisory role to pome fruit producers regarding practices in the orchards, incorporating both pre- and post-harvest factors in conjunction with the team. Over time, the incumbent will develop the skills needed to manage both above- and below-ground practices for pome fruit production.
The ideal candidate must have strong communication and people skills and possess the ability to break down complex issues and approach problem-solving in a step-by-step manner.
Responsibilities will include: *Weekly farm visits to advise and assist growers with tasks such as: tree training, orchard management, the application of growth regulators, thinning, and harvest *Coordinate with irrigation, fertilisation, crop protection and other horticultural consultants to determine best production practices *Assist with harvest allocation based on storability and risk factors *Collaborate with the post-harvest horticulturist for cross-discipline integration *Conduct internal and independent research to implement new technologies and projects *Collaborate with local and international industry members to build a knowledge sharing network *Administration and reporting *all other tasks related to the role.
Essential qualifications, skills, and experience:
• Relevant tertiary qualification in Horticulture or Soil science (MSc preferred);
• Previous experience in an advisory role (Horticulturist - pome fruit) will be advantageous;
• Knowledge of technical aspects of fruit production, relevant soil science, irrigation and fertilisation of pome fruit;
• The ability to setup statistical research trials, collect data, conduct literature reviews and write reports;
• Excellent computer skills and ability to work with data (statistical analysis);
• Fully bilingual (Afrikaans & English);
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel as needed.
