KPA - Overseeing and optimising the production planning process (heavy) manufacturing environment.
Ensures that production schedules are aligned with plant capacities and customer requirements, optimising efficiency, reducing costs, and maintaining high-quality standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Production Scheduling
Develop, monitor, and adjust production schedules based on plant capacities, raw material availability, and customer orders.
Coordinate with procurement and logistics teams to ensure timely availability of raw materials and resources.
Implement strategies to minimize downtime, enhance productivity, and meet customer delivery timelines.
Capacity Planning
Assess and forecast production capacities to meet current and future demand.
Identify bottlenecks in the production process and implement solutions to maximize output.
Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure equipment readiness and minimize disruptions.
Inventory Management
Oversee inventory levels of raw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), and finished goods.
Work closely with the supply chain team to optimise stock levels and reduce excess inventory.
Implement inventory control measures to prevent shortages and overstocking.
Process Optimisation
Analyse production data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Lead initiatives to streamline processes, reduce waste, and enhance operational efficiency.
Implement best practices in production planning, including the use of advanced planning tools and software.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Liaise with sales, procurement, quality assurance, and engineering teams to ensure alignment of production schedules with business objectives.
Facilitate communication between departments to resolve production issues and improve overall plant performance.
Team Leadership
Supervise and mentor production planning staff, providing training and development opportunities.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and accountability within the production planning team.
Set performance goals and conduct regular performance evaluations.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
Technical Expertise
Deep understanding of production planning principles, inventory management, and capacity planning.
Proficiency in using production planning software (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret production data and make data-driven decisions.

Ability to identify and address production inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and quality issues.
Creative thinking and innovative approach to process improvement.
Leadership
Excellent team management and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team towards achieving production goals.

Required Skills
- Production Planning: 5 to 6 years
- Manufacturing: 10 years or more
- Planning Manager: 3 to 4 years
Candidate Requirements
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.
A master’s degree is preferred.
Experience
10 years’ experience in a (heavy) manufacturing environment, 5-8 years production planning experience (of which 3 years Planning Manager exp.)
Proven track record in managing production schedules, capacity planning, and inventory control in a complex manufacturing environment.
SAP (pref. Super-User) and Excellent MS Office Skills (Advanced Excel)
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is based in a steel processing plant with exposure to high temperatures, noise, and heavy machinery.
The role may require occasional travel to other plants or supplier locations.Living in KZN or prepare to relocate on own cost
Own car / Drivers license
