With well-established FMCG related manufacturer based in Aeroton, an industrial area South West of Johannesburg (close to areas like Ormonde, Roodepoort & Soweto)
Job Purpose - To provide maintenance and engineering services ensuring optimum plant and equipment availability according to recognised technical requirements and standards. Dismantle and repair faulty components according to technical specifications. Make use of hand and power tools to apply sound engineering techniques. Application of knowledge, skills and expertise in specialised technical discipline within a regulated framework, according to tolerance specifications.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Matric
- Trade Tested as a Fitter & Turner
- 4-5 years' experience
- Additional courses related to Project Management, Maintenance, Design, and equipment-specific training will be advantageous
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, diagrams, and manuals
- Knowledge of various hand and power tools used in maintenance and repair work
- Familiarity with maintenance management systems and computerised maintenance software (Shopware)
- Understanding of health and safety regulations and the ability to work in compliance with them
- Good communication and teamwork skills
Key responsibilities will be:
• Equipment Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs on mechanical equipment and machinery, such as vacuum pumps, glue pump and production line equipment. This involves troubleshooting issues, diagnosing problems, and implementing appropriate solutions to minimize downtime and optimize equipment performance.
• Preventive Maintenance: Make use of developed and implemented preventive maintenance schedules and procedures to ensure the ongoing reliability and safety of equipment. This includes performing routine maintenance tasks, such as lubrication, calibration, and adjustment of components, as well as replacing worn-out parts and conducting routine inspections.
• Equipment Installation and Commissioning: Assist in the installation, setup, and commissioning of new equipment and machinery. This may involve assembling components, aligning parts, connecting electrical and mechanical systems, and performing test runs to ensure proper functionality.
• Equipment Repair: Respond to equipment breakdowns and malfunctions promptly to minimize production disruptions. Diagnose faults and mechanical failures, disassemble and reassemble machinery, replace defective parts, and restore equipment to operational condition using hand and power tools. The Fitter and Turner should also be competent to use the workshop’s lathe to machine and fabricate critical spares that are needed to repair production machines in the factory.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including job cards, inspection reports, and equipment performance data. Report any significant issues, safety concerns, or improvement opportunities to supervisors or maintenance manager.
• Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols (behaviour-based safety), procedures, and regulations to minimize workplace accidents and ensure a safe working environment. Identify potential safety hazards associated with equipment and machinery and take appropriate measures to mitigate risks.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for equipment optimization, reliability improvement, and cost reduction. Propose and implement modifications, upgrades, or process enhancements to enhance equipment performance, efficiency, and longevity.
• Collaboration: Collaborate with other maintenance and production personnel to troubleshoot complex issues, share knowledge, and provide technical support where needed.
• Complied with conducting tasks within the behaviour-based safety system as prescribed by business policy.
• Responsible for starting, monitoring, and stopping the plant’s Generator, Compressor, and other critical equipment during their shift and after hours (if on standby).
• Be available for shift work and be on standby as and when required.
